Why do therapists charge “so much?”:
I get it, a therapist is an investment! I wrote a longer blog post answering this question, but here’s my short answer. When you pay my hourly rate you’re not only paying for my time, you’re also paying for the costs of running my business (rent, etc.), my years of experience and schooling, the time and energy I spend prepping for sessions (doing research about an issues you’ve brought up, etc.), the time I spend completing administrative tasks, and you’re renting out my nervous system. I am a deeply invested therapist, and what we do in therapy affects my body and mind.
Insurance:
I’ve moved away from accepting insurance. Due to the constraints insurance companies place on session limits, diagnoses, and treatment, I do not take insurance. Additionally, I believe in prioritizing confidentiality, and therefore, I do not support sharing Protected Health Information with third parties. However, I can provide you with a receipt of service (Superbill) to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Note, not all insurance companies are willing to reimburse for mental health services.
